POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (NBC/FWC/) - There was an eye-opening discovery along the South Florida coast after a huge eyeball washed ashore.

A man walking along the sand in Pompano Beach, about 35 miles north of Miami, came upon the eyeball on Wednesday.

The beachgoer called Florida Fish and Wildlife and turned the eyeball over to them.

They put the eyeball on ice so it can be analyzed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

Agency spokeswoman Carli Segelson said the eyeball likely came from a marine animal, since it was found on a beach. Possible candidates include a giant squid, a whale or some type of large fish.
