PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A new study suggests Rhode Island's public smoking ban is succeeding in reducing the number of hospitalizations for heart attacks.
The study by the state's Department of Health found a 28 percent drop in heart attack hospitalizations between 2003 and 2009. The state enacted its public smoking ban in 2005.
The study released Tuesday calculates that fewer hospitalizations for heart attacks translated into $6 million in health care savings.
State Health Director Michael Fine says the study shows the smoking ban is improving the health of Rhode Islanders while reducing the state's health care costs.
