UD Women improve to 17-1

DAYTON, Ohio - The No. 17/16 University of Dayton women’s basketball team defeated the Massachusetts Minutewomen 83-44 Sunday afternoon at UD Arena. The Flyers set a new season-high record of forced turnovers by pressuring the Minutewomen into 31 for the game.  Dayton remains undefeated in Atlantic 10 games and raised their record to 17-1 (5-0 A-10). With the loss, Massachusetts falls to 3-17 (1-4 A-10).

Dayton was led by freshman Amber Deane (18 points, 5 assists) and sophomore Andrea Hoover (18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists). Sophomore Ally Malott scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the day. Senior Olivia Applewhite also reached double digits as she tallied 13 points.

In the first half, the Flyers jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. Forcing 20 first-half turnovers, Dayton dominated the tempo and scored 21 points off the turnovers, many on fast break opportunities.

Deane led the transition game and scored 11 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Hoover shot 2-of-3 from behind the arc and led the Flyers with 12 points in the first twenty minutes of action.

Dayton entered the locker room with a 41-17 lead and maintained the momentum after the break. Every player on the team recorded a steal as Hoover and Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova led the Flyers with three steals each.

The Flyers shot 49.2% (31-of-63) from the floor and 80% (16-of-20) from the free throw line. Deane made seven of her nine shots from the field while Malott connected on six of nine. The Dayton defense held UMass to a 33.3% (15-of-45) field goal percentage.

Dayton continues A-10 play Wednesday, Jan. 30 when the Flyers travel to Virginia to take on the VCU Rams at Verizon Wireless Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. ET.
