Five Flyers scored in double figures as the No. 18/15 University of Dayton women’s basketball team defeated Fordham 68-57 Sunday evening to give UD Head Coach Jim Jabir his 400 th career win. He becomes the 46 th coach, who is currently actively coaching, to reach the milestone.
In a battle of two of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 standings, freshman Amber Deane led the Flyers (21-1, 9-0 A-10) with 14 points, 5 assists, and three steals. Freshman Kelley Austria and senior Olivia Applewhite each added 12 points, while junior Cassie Sant and graduate student Brittany Wilson chipped in 10 points apiece.
Marah Strickland paced Fordham (16-7, 6-2 A-10) with a game-high 21 points. Erin Rooney added 18 points for the Rams.
UD won the battle of the boards 38-30. Applewhite had a game-high 9 rebounds and Wilson had a season-high 8 rebounds for the Flyers. Andrea Hoover tied her career high in steals with four thefts and she also had 6 rebounds. Ally Malott also had 6 rebounds for the Flyers.
Dayton dominated in the post, outscoring Fordham 46-16 on points in the paint. The Flyers also capitalized on the Rams’ 22 throwaways, outscoring Fordham 21-7 in points off turnovers. UD’s bench also came up big, outscoring Fordham’s 34-0.
There were six lead changes and the game was tied up 10 different times. UD led at the half 33-30 and improve its record to 19-0 when leading at the half.
The Flyers used a 15-3 run over six-minute span and held their biggest lead of the game, 54-37, when Hoover hit a jumper with 10:12 to play in the game. The Rams used a 12-0 run of their own to pull within five with 7:45 remaining in the game.
Applewhite and Wilson each scored five points and had four rebounds in the final six minutes to propel UD to the victory.
Dayton returns home for a nationally-televised (CBS Sports Network), Atlantic 10 matchup against Duquesne on Monday, Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. at UD Arena. It will be Heart Health Awareness game and a Red Out with fans who wear red get admission for $1.
