Dragons stung by Bees 4-1

Burlington, Iowa (WDTN) - Burlington’s Douglas Landaeta drilled a two-run home run and four pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Bees defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Monday night.  The Bees won two-out-of-three in the series as the Dragons finished the six-game road trip with a 2-4 record.  Dayton fell to 9-15 in the second half.

Landaeta’s two-run homer broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning.  Burlington pitchers combined to retire the last 15 Dayton batters in the game over the last five innings.

After Burlington scored an unearned run in the second, Dayton tied the game in the fifth when Kyle Waldrop tripled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.  But Waldrop was the final Dayton base runner of the night as Burlington scored two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Dayton starting pitcher Radhames Quezada worked five innings and allowed just one hit and one unearned run while walking two and striking out four.  He was not involved in the decision.  Lucas O’Rear (0-1) followed Quezada and allowed the two-run homer to Landaeta to suffer the loss.  He worked one inning and gave up one hit and two runs (one earned) with a strikeout.  El’Hajj Muhammad was next to the mound and went one inning, allowing two hits and an unearned run setup by Muhammad’s error on a wild pick-off throw.  Mike Dennhardt pitched a scoreless inning to close out the Dragons night on the mound. He struck out one and walked one.

The Dragons collected three hits.  They included a single by Juan Perez in the first inning, a single by Jefry Sierra in the third, and Waldrop’s triple in the fifth.  Burlington pitchers issued just one walk.

The Dragons do not play on Tuesday.  They open a six-game homestand at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday against the Clinton Lumber Kings at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM).  Stalin Gerson (4-6, 4.42) will start for the Dragons against Clinton’s Trevor Miller (5-6, 3.65).

Notes:  Dragons designated hitter Juan Silva was ejected in the eighth inning on an unusual play.  After strike two was called on Silva, he stepped out of the batter’s box.  After being told by plate umpire Ryan Additon to step back in the box, Silva backed up further and Additon called strike three without a pitch being thrown.  Silva was then ejected for arguing the call.
