DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Follow Up: Cruiser cam video released from Wednesdays drive-thru robbery chase.
Police say they don't want you running after, or trying to catch an armed suspect if you get robbed. But that's what the owner of Third Base Drive Thru did because he said he has had enough.
"That guy that owns that drive thru running down the street screaming get 'em," an unidentified woman said. "I just hear some guys screaming and I look out the door and there's all these people running up the street. So, I shut my door."
Tom Mauro, the owner of The Third Base Drive Thru chased the bandit that robbed him at gunpoint on Wednesday.
Dayton Police Sergeant Moises Perez said that's not a smart move.
"The owner is some what of an animated person, very frustrated cause he's been robbed not even several months ago," Perez said.
Just before noon a bandit thought he'd "steal third" by robbing the drive thru. Police said he put a gun to Mauro's head and made him give up the cash.
During the chase the crook jumped in a getaway car with two other men. Police believe the suspect was heading for home when he was "tagged out" on Riverside Drive in Harrison Township.
"Initially, we're told the car might have flipped over. But, once we reviewed the tape, it appears the vehicle lost control and did a 360 and that's when it went up off the road and hit itself off to the side," an officer said.
Police were able to arrest the suspect after prying him out of his car. They also found a wad a cash on him.
Officers near the crime scene also found the gun he dumped in the backyard of a neighbor.
"Yeah I got a couple of kids and its even scarier to know that they found a gun in the backyard," the neighbor said.
Police are now searching for two other men they believe were in the getaway car.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital. He'll be charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
