ATHENS, Ohio (WDTN) - Ohio University cancelled classes Wednesday afternoon as police searched for a suspect in an armed robbery near campus.

According to an alert from school officials sent and messages posted on the official university website, the school’s president closed the campus as a precaution.

The university asked all students to return to their residences and all non-essential employees should go home. Classes are scheduled to resume Thursday.

Around 9:24 a.m., Athens Police were notified of a robbery at the Station Street Apartments. Police notified campus police that the suspect was reportedly armed.

Students were first notified of the incident just before 10 a.m.
