HILLSBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - An Ohio dog pound will finally rid itself of an old relic with too many bad memories.
The Highland County Dog Pound will dismantle its old gas chamber used to euthanize animals.
The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will do the work.
The chamber has been sitting idle since 2009, but workers say it is a sad reminder of the animals who died in it.
It will be replaced with a much needed washer and dryer for workers to put to good use. The set was donated by a supporter of the Ohio SPCA.
The Ohio SPCA launched a program called The End of Gassing 2013 to bring awareness to what it calls the cruelty of gassing animals.
Gas chambers are only used in a few counties now, but it was common practice for many years.
