Should Springboro teachers pack heat?

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (WDTN) - Gun laws are undoubtedly on the minds of school leaders everywhere.  Since the Connecticut shooting rampage, the issue of teachers carrying weapons has surged to the forefront of public opinion.

The Miami Valley is not immune to the discussion.  In fact, the Springboro City School District will take up the issue of concealed weapons in its buildings at a meeting Thursday, January 10.

Board member Jim Rigano will lead the discussion.  He told 2 NEWS he would like to develop a policy related to allowing school employees, who are also concealed permit holders, to carry in the schools.  Thursday's meeting will determine if other board members are open to the discussion.

Rigano believes it will serve as a deterrent to would-be perpetrators.  "Right now, our deterrent is a little sign on the front door that says you're not allowed to bring a weapon in here," said Rigano during a phone interview.

Rigano said the Ohio Revised Code prohibits people from bringing weapons in schools unless the school board grants authorization.  Rigano believes allowing school employees, who are also permit holders, could help prevent tragedies such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Of course, he said, it wouldn't be a blanket policy.

"They have to authorize the individuals," said Rigano.  "We can't just make a blanket policy and allow it.  We would have to actually authorize specific individuals."

The superintendent told 2 NEWS he has no intent to arm all of Springboro teachers, but is open to exploring the laws.  It's unclear how other board members feel about the topic.
