WEST ALEXANDRIA, Ohio (WDTN) - A West Alexandria man has died while serving his country in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense says Army Spc. Cody Suggs, 22, died March 7 at Kandahar Airfield.
He was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom at the time, but officials say he died in a non-combat incident.
Suggs was assigned to the 1487th Transportation Company out of Piqua which is part of the 371st Sustainment Brigade out of Springfield.
2 NEWS was there in November 2012 when Sugg's when family and friends saw his company off to war .
An Ohio National Guard spokesperson told 2 NEWS Suggs joined the guard in 2009. He was a truck driver for his company. This was his first deployment.
His death has rocked his hometown.
Mayor Carol Lunsford says Suggs was a graduate of Twin Valley South School.
She is friends with his mother and says her thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
She also plans to do something to honor Suggs once his family figures out funeral arrangements.
2 News spoke with some of Suggs' family members but they're, of course, grieving and didn't want to do any interviews.
