KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) - One out of every 12 women in the United States will be a victim of a violent crime in their life, according to the internationally known Rape Aggression Defense systems organization or R.A.D.

Locally, violent crime is down, but Kettering police want women to be prepared.  The Kettering Police Department is holding a R.A.D. instructional course.

"This is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women," said Sergeant Sanders, with Kettering Police.  "The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training."

Kettering police taught 2New's Alexa Ashwell simple, repeatable techniques to defend herself in a potential dangerous situation.

This course will be taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and will provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. The workbook/reference manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous growth.

This is a 12 hour course spread out over four Tuesdays.  Women of all ages are encouraged to sign up.  This course is offered for $25 to cover course materials, but additional family members pay only $10.

If you would like to register for this or future self-defense training programs, or have any questions, please feel free to contact Sergeant Lee Sanders at (937) 296-3250
