Victim's dad hopes to stop drunk drivers

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - It was a tragic moment that changed Scott Reedy's life forever.

In 1999, his 15-year-old daughter Sarah got in a car with an 18-year-old who had been drinking.

"My daughter and this gentleman, and three other people were in a car went to Caesar's Creek, afterwards, the driver was driving erratically.  He hit a guardrail, killing my daughter and seriously injuring some of the other passengers," says Reedy.

Reedy shares his story, hoping it will stop people from getting behind the wheel drunk.

"One in three people are going to be affected by a drunk driver in the course of a lifetime, that's a phenomenal amount.  You know, we need to stop drinking and driving," explains Reedy.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck is also doing his part to keep drunk drivers of the road.  He started the started Arrive Safe Program in 2007.

"We've given over 2500 free cab rides to people who have been kept off the roads and like i always tell people the life you safe may be your own," comments Heck.

And Reedy knows, all too well, the heartbreak of losing a loved one.

That's why he's pleading with people to make good decisions.

"That decision to drink and have a good time.  Don't let it end with jail or someone to be seriously injured or even worse to be dead." says Reedy.

The Arrive Safe Program runs 6 PM to 6 AM through December 31st.
