UD to repair floors of student houses

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The University of Dayton has announced its plan to reinforce the floors of 301 student houses after the floors of two houses collapsed in early January.  In each case, the students were hosting large gatherings.

No one was injured; however, the incidents prompted university officials to implement new occupancy limits for each university-owned home.

On Sunday, university officials met with the Student Government Association to discuss a more permanent solution.

Officials have decided the occupancy limits issued to student residents are temporary while contractors renovate the floors of student houses over the next two months. The numbers, which will vary according to structure, will be readjusted to reflect "practical and safe limits," according to Daniel J. Curran, who is the University's President.

"This is what is so special about the University of Dayton," said Emily Kaylor, who is president of the student government association.  "Our administration knew we (students) were unhappy with the restricted occupancy limit and cared enough to make a change."

The University typically invests $2 million annually in routine renovations and upgrades to student houses.
