DPD release dash cam video of high speed chase, officer involved shooting

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Dayton police have identified one of the two men who were involved in a high speed chase that forced one officer to open fire Thursday.

Askiya Robinson, 21, is facing aggravated robbery and failure to comply charges.

Chief Biehl said on March 20 police received reports of an aggravated robbery in Dayton.  The victim told police three men robbed him then stole his car.

Police said Robinson and his passenger, a 17-year-old boy, led police on a high speed chase after officers spotted them in the stolen car on a Dayton road.

The chase stretched approximately 2.5 miles and ended in the 900 block of Stoltz Avenue.

Police said Robinson jumped out of the car and ran from police.  His passenger also got out but was armed with a gun.

"The suspect did not comply with the officer's orders to drop the weapon," said Chief Richard Biehl.  "The officer opened fire, shooting the suspect once.  The suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries."

Officer Jon Rillo, a five year veteran of the department, was driving the cruiser with Officer Jon Sopczak, a four year veteran of the department, in the front passenger seat.  Police said Officer Jon Sopczak shot the suspect.  Officer Dan Reynolds, a 12-year veteran of the department, also responded with his K-9 unit.

"The officers have been placed on administrative leave pending this investigation," said Chief Biehl.

The investigation is on-going.
