Spring forward one hour Sunday

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Don't forget to spring forward one hour this weekend.  Daylight Saving Time begins at 2:00 am Sunday.

It gives us all an extra hour of light in the evenings.  Some studies suggest that it helps save energy.  Fire marshals want you to use it as a reminder to  replace the batteries in your smoke detector.

Ohio Fire Marshal Larry Flowers says, “The cost of a 9-volt battery is about $7.00.  Pick up the batteries to be ready for Sunday.  It’s a small price for your family’s safety.”

There have also been extensive studies over the years about how it affects your health.  To help you adapt, Dr. Praveen Rudraraju , director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco , N.Y ., offered these tips to MSNBC online:

- For the two weeks after the time change, get up five to 10 minutes earlier every two to three days.

- Exercise 30 to 40 minutes in bright light (before 5 p.m.) daily.

- Eat at least three to five hours before you go to bed.

- Don't drink caffeinated beverages after noon.

- Limit alcohol to one drink with dinner and do not have alcohol after dinner.

- Don't do any computer work during the hour before bedtime. Instead, relax by reading, listening to quiet music or watching TV.

- Stay out of your bedroom until bedtime. If possible, do not work in your bedroom.
