Speed limit change is on the table

WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) - West Carrollton city leaders will consider a speed limit change on a busy stretch of road.

They originally wanted to change the posted speed limit to 25 through the central business district called the Dixie Drive.-Central Avenue corridor in downtown West Carrollton.

Opponents said it would become a speed trap designed to make the city money, which they said would eventually drive people away from the downtown area.

Residents preferred a speed limit of 35 mph.

In November, city council decided to compromise and make it 30 mph.

Tuesday, December 11, city council will vote to make it official.

The city says their goal with this speed reduction, timed to the completion of the new Exit 47 reconstruction, was to create an environment along the corridor that was more desirable for economic redevelopment, making the city a safer place to walk, bike and park as approximately 77 on-street parking spaces have now been installed along the corridor.

City leaders hope this speed limit compromise will allow the city to continue with their long-term plans for the area, and also satisfy those people who are concerned about drivers who may avoid the business district.  

Council will meet Tuesday evening, December 11 at 6:30 p.m. to vote on the ordinance.

If approved, the new speed limit will go into effect Jan. 10, 2013.
