DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - It wasn't just the roads that gave people problems following the freezing rain. There was a lot of slipping and sliding when people tried getting out the door, which in turn meant a lot of trips to local ER.
"We've seen mostly ankle and wrist sprains," said Doctor Ramash Gupta, who is with Miami Valley Hospital.
Dr. Gupta said elderly people are most at-risk for injury when it comes to falling on ice.
"They do not have as much "cushion" protecting their bones," said Dr. Gupta. "Younger people are more agile."
Dr. Gupta suggested sprinkling salt on sidewalks and driveways, as well as wearing shoes with lots of tread to avoid falling. But, if you are going to fall, believe it or not, Doctor Gupta said there is a correct way to fall.
"If you are going to fall the best thing to do is on the buttocks," said Dr. Gupta. "That is where the most padding is, but even then it might not save you from a fracture or a broken bone."
