Scherrie McLin surrenders; Bond set at $250,000

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Scherrie McLin, a former funeral director accused of fraud, surrendered to authorities in Dayton at 2:00 Thursday afternoon. She immediately appeared before a judge who set cash bond at $250,000.

A warrant was issued for her arrest February 12, 2013 after she was indicted for fraud and other charges.

Prosecutors say McLin took more than $200,000 worth of pre-paid funeral money, but never fulfilled her obligations.

They say more than 50 families were affected over a 20-year period.

McLin was last in the news when a cleaning person discovered urns inside a property she owned in Dayton. No criminal charges were filed in that case.

McLin was not immediately able to post bail and was taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck, Jr. explained the high bond request this way, "You've got to remember this issue has been going on for a long time and we need to ensure the suspect is going to appear at trial and I would have to say for now her appearance in prior court proceedings has been dismal at best. She has just avoided the justice system."

McLin's attorney, Clyde Bennett, II, argued the bond was too high.  He told 2 NEWS, "What I can tell you is she looks forward to her day in court. She's ready, willing and able to face justice and resolve this matter favorably.  She's not upset, she's not depressed, she's not crying."
