Police in riot gear called to control UD students

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - University of Dayton Police along with police crews from across the Miami Valley were called to the University of Dayton's student neighborhood early Sunday morning to control students celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

Equipped with riot gear, crews responded to the 400 block of Kiefaber Street around 4 a.m.

Revelers were seen jumping on cars and smashing beer bottles in the street.

2 News crews witnessed police escorting University President, Dr. Daniel Curran, away from the disturbance.

A police cruiser and a number of other vehicles were damaged in the ruckus.

As police were able to contain the situation on Kiefaber, several other disturbances broke out on other streets.

Officials from the university said there were no injuries reported.

University officials stated one person was arrested for public intoxication and underage drinking. They stated that person was not a University of Dayton student. 2 News crews captured video of a woman striking a law enforcement officer, then being taken away in handcuffs.

University officials released a statement saying: "Out of concern for safety, large non-University-sponsored gatherings will not be permitted today."

"While the vast majority of students were not involved in this incident, the behavior is unacceptable and disappointing. We want to ensure that any St. Patrick's Day celebrations on campus today are safe.  Students are expected to comply with any requests from public safety officers or other University officials.  Students also are expected to comply with our Community Standards of Behavior, and will be held accountable for non-compliance."

The melee comes less than 12 hours before the University of Dayton is scheduled to hold a press conference on First Four events, which put the national spotlight on Dayton as part of the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
