Norman sentenced to prison for daughter's death

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Angela Norman was sentenced to nine years in prison Thursday morning.

Norman is the mother of the disabled teen who weighed just 28 pounds when she died of starvation March 1, 2011.

Makayla Norman, 14, had cerebral palsy and was in the care of Norman and three home care nurses at the time of her death.

"This is a case that I can say I have never seen in my career," said Assistant Montgomery County Prosecutor Tracey Ballard Tangeman. "I hope to hell I never see it again. This child was left to rot and she was left to starve to death. She unfortunately didn't have the ability to alert her caregivers or anybody else that she needed help".

Angela Norman pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter last month.  She faced a maximum of ten years in prison.

Norman did not talk during sentencing but, her attorney told the judge she was suffering from depression and was overwhelmed with Makayla's healthcare.

"Whatever the court decides in is an appropriate sentence for Angela, it won't equal the punishment and grief that this lady has placed upon herself for committing this act against her own daughter," said Daniel Brinkman, Norman's attorney.

The three nurses involved are also facing charges in Makayla's death. They are awaiting trial.
