HARRISON TWP., Ohio (WDTN) - A man was arrested Friday after officials stated he assaulted a deputy trying to rescue him from a burning car.

John Cecil Thigpen was booked into the Montgomery County Jail Friday evening.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was on patrol in the area of West Hillcrest and Grant Avenues in Harrison Township around 6:30 p.m. when she was flagged down by a neighbor who said there was a vehicle on fire.

The deputy found the burning car in the 2200 block of Grant Avenue and spotted Thigpen in the front seat. When she opened the door and told him to get out, he told her he wanted to die and to leave him alone.

The deputy was able to rescue Thigpen, but once she got him out of the vehicle, he attempted to assault her.

Thigpen was taken into custody. Charges are pending.
