Former state senator replaces Luckie on Nov. ballot

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Members of the Montgomery County Democratic party nominated Former State Senator Fred Strahorn to replace Clayton Luckie on the November ballot for the 39th House district seat.

It was an almost unanimous vote at Democratic headquarters in downtown Dayton Sunday.

Two people were nominated by the county party, retired Colonel Vic Harris and Fred Strahorn, who is currently a senior advisor for the Ohio Democratic Party.

Each nominee spoke for a total of 5 minutes and pitched why they were the best candidate to represent the Democratic party.

Strahorn focused on his experience.

"I've served in the state legislature, both the House and Senate, for a total of 10 years," said Strahorn.

Strahorn was already planning to run for the 5th Senate seat in 2014.

Vic Harris argued Strahorn would be better suited for the Senate because he (Strahorn) is more experienced than himself.

"We need to do what is best for the Democratic party," said Harris.  "Strahorn is more experienced and therefore would better serve the party in the Senate in 2014."

However, Harris received only one vote.

Strahorn said his first order of business will be getting things in order.

"I need to raise money, network and build a campaign team," said Strahorn.

Strahorn said he will focus on advancing Democratic policies with the best interest of the average person in mind.

Strahorn will not be appointed to serve the remainder of Luckie's term.  If elected this November, he will serve a full two year term.
