Hundreds march in honor of MLK

DAYTON (WDTN) - Hundreds of people participated in the annual Martin Luther King Junior walk in Dayton on Monday.

"We consider this not really a day off, but a day on," said Reverend Jerome McCorry. McCorry is President of the Adam Project, a faith-based, anti-violence organization. "This is a day when people are making a new commitment to become activists in their own community and we are excited about what that means".

The crowd walked from West Third Street to the Dayton Convention Center downtown.

Michelle Waymire walked with her four children. "This is their first march and I wanted them to see what others before us have done".

Waymire said the freezing temperatures could not keep them from attending. "It didn't scare Martin Luther King and other people, so a little bit of cold wouldn't hurt the kids either".

At the end of the walk, the crowd gathered inside the Convention Center to celebrate Dr. King's life and to watch President Obama's second inauguration.

 "Not only is it an amazing event, it's a historical moment," said Anthony Whitmore, Chairman of the Dayton MLK event.
