Family helping police catch a killer

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - You can see a new billboard as you drive down Salem Avenue. Corey Mitchell's loved ones are hoping it will help catch his killer.

"We're a very close-knit family and we're not going to let this disappear," says Mitchell's aunt Sheila Cranford.

It's been two years since Mitchell was gunned down outside his home in the 100-block of North Paul Laurance Dunbar.  It was May 29th, 2010.  The 34-year-old had just arrived home with his 11-year-old twins. When the three got out of the car, a gunman, who investigators say had been hiding in some tall grass, jumped out and started shooting.  Mitchell was killed but his daughter, who was shot in the knee, survived.

"The whole family was devastated. We were very devastated and there was a lot of anger," explains Cranford.

Now that anger has turned into action.  Mitchell's aunt says police are close to solving the case but they need help from the community.

"Prayerfully, one day, somebody's riding down the street and sees that billboard and it kicks into their conscience.  Because, we know, that there's somebody out there that knows something and we want them to come forward," comments Cranford.

And she has a message for the murderer.

"You're not going to be out here for very long. You're going to be caught.  Justice will be served and maybe we can begin to have a little closure," says Cranford.

There is a reward being offered.  If you have any information on Mitchell's murder, call Crimestoppers at 222-STOP(7867).
