DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The doctor who cared for a 14-year-old girl who starved to death, now faces criminal charges.
On Wednesday, Montgomery County authorities filed three counts of failure to report child abuse or neglect against Dr. Margaret Edwards.
Edwards cared for Makalya Norman from July 2010 until the time of her death.
Norman died in March 2011 after she was found unresponsive at her Taylor Street home in Dayton.
The teen, who suffered from cerebal palsey, weighed just 28 points and her body was covered in bed sores.
2 NEWS checked with the State Medical Board of Ohio and Edwards' medical license is active and she does not have any disciplinary action on her record.
Edwards told 2 NEWS she was unaware of the allegations and believes she did not do anything wrong.
"Well, I hadn't seen her for a while before this happened so it was like six months between the time that I saw her and when all of this happened," said Edwards.
Edwards is scheduled to make her first court appearance on the charges in juvenile court on August 8.
If found guilty, she faces $1,000 fine and 18 months in jail.
Edwards is the fifth person to face charges connected for Makayla Norman's death.
Earlier this year, Makayla's mother, Angela Norman, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and endangering children. She is now serving nine years in prison.
Makayla's head nurse, Mollie Parsons, is expected to go to trial Aug. 27th. She surrendered nursing license.
Two other nurses will go to trial together. Kathryn Williams was a nurse with Exclusive Home Care. Mary Kilby worked for Cincinnati-based CareStar and was responsible for overseeing home health care providers, like Exclusive. That trial is set to begin Sept. 24th.
2 NEWS also checked on the state's investigation of the Makayla's death. A spokeswoman for Attorney General Mike Dewine told us his "health care fraud section" has no new information to release at this time, but is still investigating.
Alex Lovett's family says it's a miracle he survived this deadly car crash.
