Dayton Public Schools talk safety

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Safety was the issue at the Dayton Education Council meeting Monday evening.

Dayton Public Schools officials, joined by police and members of the sheriff's department, met with parents to discuss safety and security plans already in place and to take suggestions for improvement.

One parent asked about weaknesses.

Without giving specifics, a school official says there are several things they would like to improve upon, but more money is needed.

They say they're confident they're providing a safe place for students to learn.

"Some of the things we already have in place have to do with making sure the doors are locked at the proper times, making sure we have security cameras at our entrances and exits and making sure we have officers in our schools," said Toni Perry Gillispie, Dayton Public Schools.

"It seems like they've got their priorities in order and are really trying to move forward and not only get the parents, but also the community involved in what's going on," said Monica Fine, parent.

The Dayton Education Council meets once a month.  It is made up of representatives from each of the Dayton Public Schools.
