ENGLEWOOD, Ohio (WDTN) - An off-duty Trotwood police officer was killed Wednesday morning when his pickup truck tumbled down an embankment and submerged in 12 feet of water.
David Yaney's truck went down a ravine along Taywood Road in Englewood around 5:50 a.m.
An Englewood police officer told 2 NEWS a witness reported hearing someone scream for help after the truck crashed, but no body was immediately found.
Using a crane, rescue workers managed to pull the truck from the water just after 9:30.
Divers found Yaney's body a short time later.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Trotwood Police Chief Quincy E. Pope Sr. said of the 33-year veteran:
"Officer Yaney was not only a colleague and friend, but he was our family. We are heart broken and grief stricken. It is hard to find the words to express our feelings of loss and sadness. We ask that you keep the family, the Trotwood Police Department, and our community in your prayers."
Taywood Road was closed for most of the day between Wenger Road and South Main Street while crews recovered Yaney's body and police conducted their investigation.
