BROOKVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - Brookville Local Schools will receive a grant of $2,200 to expand the school’s outdoor classroom, according to the Ohio EPA in a news release on Monday.

The grant will provide supplies to add a vegetable garden to the school’s existing outdoor classroom and greenhouse. Approximately 1,465 students in grades four through 12 will participate in the program.

An engineering component will have high school students divide the garden into sections and calculate the area and productivity of each plot, using vertical gardening techniques to maximize productivity. The garden will be used year-round, with indoor germination of seeds and winter hydroponics gardening in the school’s greenhouse.

Local student families will maintain the garden during the summer. Some food produced in the garden will be used in the school cafeteria.

Twelve projects throughout the state were funded for $46,493.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund gives out approximately $1 million each year for environmental education projects targeting kindergarten through university students, the general public and the regulated community.
