Nurse in teen's death headed for trial

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A mistrial was declared in Mollie Parson's trial Thursday afternoon after an outburst by a prospective juror during jury selection.  The jury candidate reportedly yelled out that the defendent was guilty.  Parson's lawyer immediately called for a mistrial and the judge granted one.  The court released a video copy of the judge chastising the candidate.

Parson is the nurse charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 14-year-old girl who had cerebral palsy and weighed 28 pounds when she died last year in southwest Ohio.

She is also charged with failing to provide for a functionally impaired person and tampering with records.

Authorities say Makayla Norman had bed sores and showed other signs of neglect when she died on March 1, 2011. They say 42-year-old Parsons and the girl's mother were supposed to care for the girl at the Normans' home.

Norman's mother has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other charges.

Authorities attributed the death to nutritional and medical neglect complicated by her chronic condition.
