DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The weekend is expected to usher in another round of winter weather.

"This may be a good time to bring your pets indoors," said Nora Vondrell, who is the executive director for SICSA Pet Adoption Center.

When asked how cold is too cold for pets, Vondrell said it depends on whether the pet has access to shelter.

"Its important your pet has shelter to block the wind, snow or freezing rain," said Vondrell.  "You can even make a shelter for stray cats or dogs using a box, newspaper, or hay."

Vondrell said its also important to make sure your pet has access to food and unfrozen water when outside.

"Water needs to be changed regularly to make sure it doesn't freeze in the bowl," said Vondrell.  "Your pet will get dehydrated without water."

Vondrell added salt can irritate your dog's paws.

"Its important to really wipe their paws after taking them on a walk," said Vondrell.  "You can also purchase "pet friendly" salt at your local pet store."
