TROY, Ohio (WDTN) - Leib Lurie owns a phone booth, has a business that's growing faster than a speeding bullet and can close tall buildings in a single bound.
But he's not Superman, it can just seem that way.
"As a communications superhero you love being that person your folks rely on and depend on," Lurie says.
Lurie is the man who started One Call Now in Troy.
The company sends out two to eight million messages a day that many people depend on, but he started as a mild-mannered father who got a speeding ticket going to his son's scout ceremony, only to show up and find out it had been canceled.
"Two points and $175 later I said there has to be a better way," Lurie says.
Ten years later One Call Now is employing nearly 100 people, about 50 of them added in the last two years alone.
Many know the company from its phone calls on snow days closing school, but it can reach people on everything from cell phones to rotary phones with various messages that you can even get in 55 different languages.
For a company delivering such urgent news, it does it's best to keep workers from getting stressed.
One Call Now encourages employees to bring their dogs to work with them. One dog, Ivy, even has a title, Director of First Impressions.
"It adds a bit of a homey feel and we've had one employee say it makes her more comfortable to have her dog there," says President Angela Manning.
But the company is serious when it comes to continuing to grow.
"We're really passionate about creating technical jobs for the state of Ohio," Manning says.
The company wants double its reach, which will take a heroic effort. One it's ready for.
"Whether you have a dumb phone or the smartest droid or iOS phone on the market, we can reach you," Lurie says.
