Town doubles in size with move-in day

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) - One sleepy little town got its yearly wake up call Friday with Cedarville University's move-in day.

"It's like our town comes back alive," says Carrie Minor, owner of Stoney Creek Roasters, a coffee shop in downtown Cedarville.

They know a thing or two about pick-me-ups at Stoney Creek. The one Friday is like a shot of espresso for the bottom line.

"Now we will be busy in the evenings," Minor says.

But if you think the businesses are excited about move-in day, try talking to admissions officials.

"This is kind of like birthday, Christmas, and New Year all in one because the fruit of our labor shows up today," says Roscoe Smith with Cedarville University Admissions.

This year the school is expecting more students than ever before, nearly 3,400 in all, which is about 100 more than last year.

That adds up to a lot of boxes.

"It just keeps coming and coming and coming," says Jim Huyser who was helping his daughter move in.

Thankfully parents had help from some unexpected places.

Cedarville University President Dr. William E. Brown got involved by carrying boxes for students.

The help was just one more thing meant to make students feel at home.

"I didn't bring any of my own stuff in," says Dalia Akhnoukh. "People are so nice and welcoming they brought everything in for me."

The sad part will come a little later when it's time for parents and students to part ways, but signs of reassurance were everywhere, including one that said 'Don't worry mom we'll take care of your baby.'

Because as one door closes, another one opens.

"It's exciting and new beginnings," Akhnoukh says.

Classes start Wednesday for most Cedarville students.
