Hiring freeze ordered at Wright-Patt

WPAFB, Ohio (WDTN) - Wright-Patterson Air Force Base heard the official news it was hoping to avoid.
The cuts will take effect immediately. They are in anticipation of even bigger reductions by the Department of Defense.
Air Force Materiel Command has ordered WPAFB to put a freeze on civilian hiring, fire temporary employees, cut down on travel and maintenance, as well as delay minor construction projects because of budget uncertainties across the Department of Defense.
Officials tell us they've also reduced spending this year by about $14-million.
"We're going through organization by organization right now to figure out which positions may be critical and then we'll be retaining those employees. What the final number is that will be released. I don't know right now but as I mentioned before, it's apart of their contract, it's a temporary employment," said Colonel Cassie Barlow.
And these cuts could have a big impact on the Fairborn community and beyond.
The people that are working on base, that live in our communities, this is going to be a cut to disposable income to them. It'll be an impact into their purchasing power and how they can support the community. So, any kind of loss in that respect, has a negative effect on our community," said Deborah McConnell, Fairborn City Manager.
WPAT doesn't know how the cuts will impact community events like the Tattoo Music Festival and the Dayton Air Show, but they hope to have more answers by March when Congress meets to discuss spending reductions.
Wright-Patterson is our area's largest employer with 29,000 workers.
