VERSAILLES, Ohio (WDTN) - A Darke County student athlete got quite the surprise on Wednesday during a special assembly at Versailles High School.

The principal described the characteristics needed to be Wendy's High School Heisman National Finalist, and announced that one of those finalists was senior Samuel Prakel.  He participates in cross country, track and field, and swimming, as well as student government and does community service.

"I was having some hope that I would have a chance but I never expected to become a finalist," said Prakel.

The twelve Wendy's national finalists, including Samuel,  will now travel to New York City where two national winners-one male, one female-will be chosen. Each will receive a 10-thousand dollar donation to their respective high schools; and recognition during an ESPN special airing Saturday, December 8.
