Flu vaccines in high demand

GREENE CO., Ohio (WDTN) - Keeping up with the demand for flu vaccine has proven to be challenging for clinics throughout the Miami Valley.

A shortage of flu vaccines at the doctor's office sent Matthew Janson to the Greene County Combined Health District.  His 1-year-old son needs to be vaccinated.

"He doesn't like it.  We had to schedule on his time. We made sure he had lunch before hand," said Janson, who lives in Xenia.

Registered Nurse Amy Schmitt said they have been busy vaccinating people all week, but her team of nurses are keeping up with the demand.

"We were really really busy Thursday evening. Friday we got a lot of phone calls asking us if we have flu vaccines available.  We decided by noon on Friday that we needed to offer additional clinic times," said Schmitt.

Christina Conover is the Director Of Nursing at the Clark County Combined Health District.  She said they have ran completely out of flu vaccines Friday afternoon.

Health officials encourage people of all ages to receive their flu vaccination and practice good hygiene.

"We have more on order.  We spent a number of hours trying to piece together orders from different sources.  We expect to have more vaccine sometime rather Tuesday or Wednesday," said Conover.
