SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - "It's a sad, sad day.  I mean, somebody's lost a young one," says Greg Zimmer.

Christopher Massie, 23, of Springfield was swimming with a few friends around 5 Tuesday afternoon when he drowned, according to investigators. They say Clark County rescue crews pulled him from the water which was about 8 to 10 feet deep.  Preliminary reports indicate the drowning was accidental.

"It's definitely dangerous.  There's better places to go then down there.  There's just a lot of stuff that comes down there through those rapids and gets caught up underneath.  You never know what you're going to get," says Zimmer.

Zimmer lives near the creek and takes his kids fishing there almost everyday.

"I seen everybody come down there and I kind of knew what happened once I seen the squads and everything.  I knew somebody got hurt because there was a lot of people down there. There's probably three or four people down there a day," comments Zimmer.

For Zimmer, the drowning hits close to home.

"About 30 years ago, I lost a friend of mine down there.  He went swimming and jumped in, same thing, and never came back up." says Zimmer.

And he hopes this drowning will prevent people from swimming here in the future, but he says it's unlikely.

"Some things never change.  They're going to swim.  I mean, it gets hot they're going to look for a place to cool off," explains Zimmer.

Investigators are waiting on an autopsy to learn more.  It will be handled by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

This is the second drowning in that area in a matter of a week.  A 27-year old father drowned in nearby C.J. Brown Reservoir at Buck Creek State Park June 26th.
