SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) - An early morning fire in downtown Springfield put firefighters on the defensive and stretched crews thin.
The blaze broke out around 4:30 at the former Carter Jewelers building at Fountain and Main streets.
The three alarm fire left the city of Springfield under-manned while crews worked to knock down the flames.
The aging building began to collapse as intense flames swept through the structure not allowing firefighters to enter.
Police rerouted traffic through the area while fire crews worked.
No injuries were reported.
The cause remains under investigation.
