DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - Local businesses were encouraged to participate in a regional effort to enhance Dayton's position as a green community during a new conference on Friday.

The Green500 Challenge was announced at the 2nd Street Public Market in downtown Dayton with a goal of enrolling 500 local businesses and organizations in the Green Business Certification Program within the year. The green certification is designed to help businesses take basic measures to reduce energy and resource use.

2 News spoke with a representative from Heapy Engineering who said the company had reduced its costs by $14,000 per year by looking for greener solutions, including printing and office supplies.

More than 100 businesses have already received the DRG3 Green Business Certification in the program's brief history.
