RICHMOND, Ind. (WDTN) - Nearly 200 homes were evacuated Thursday morning on the east side of Richmond, Ind. because of a gas leak.
Richmond Police dispatch said the area affected borders US 40 to the north, South B Street to the south, and 30th to 34th streets east to west.
Vectren crews are in the area to make repairs and fire personnel have been positioned in the area on standby. Authorities told 2 NEWS workers have to enter each home to turn off its gas meter in order to complete the repairs.
Crews began evacuating homes around 5:30 a.m. Thursday. City officials opened Richmond Square Mall as a place for residents to seek shelter from the cold.
Charles Elementary and Test Intermediate schools were also closed due to the evacuations. Students who were already on the bus will be taken back home. Otherwise, parents may pick up their children at McGuire Hall at Richmond High School.
