DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) - The Montgomery County Coroner has identified the man discovered inside a Dayton recycling center as Robert Benedict, 60, of Dayton.
Investigators were called to Rumpke Recycling in the 1900 block of East Monument Avenue just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after a worker found a human leg.
"The worker when he found the leg, he quickly shut down the machine, separated the items-- then once the detectives got here we were able to sort through the other material and find the rest of the person," said Sergeant Eric Sheldon of the Dayton Police Department.
Investigators snapped photos, and sorted through the bundles of material. That's when they discovered the rest Benedict, nearly 150 feet away.
Officials with the coroner's office could not confirm if foul play was involved; however, speculated he had been dead for days rather than weeks.
After the discovery of the body, Larry Stone, the Safety Director at Rumpke, told us they took a head count of the employees.
Stone said the man was not a worker at the recycling plant, but he was focused on the emotional state of his employees.
"Tomorrow, when this sinks into them, it can be devastating. The person lost their life for some reason that we don't know, and we want to make sure our employees are talked to by a professional that can help them just understand the whole grieving process," said Stone.
Grief counselors would be available to any Rumpke employees who needed to talk to someone.
The investigation is on-going.
