SAINT PARIS, Ohio (WDTN) - The long lived strong thunderstorm complex meteorologists call a derecho has left a trail of debris across most of the Miami Valley. In Saint Paris along Runkle Road in Champaign County Eric Albright took these photos.
The cloud looks like what some may classify as a tornado. By zooming in the photo you can even see some debris in the foreground. However because the thunderstorm winds were so strong at times near 80 mph and our moderate drought conditions played a role. The dust along the ground may have been picked up along the gust front and may have created some swirls. This may have created some very interested This may have formed a weak "gustnado."
The National Weather Service in Wilmington has had several reports of tornadoes today. However they will not be conducting any damage surveys due to the nature of the thunderstorm event we had. This will be classified as a high end straight line wind event.
