Ohio gov talks higher education funding

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio's governor says college and university presidents in the state have made headway on a plan to achieve better academic outcomes for students, though he's keeping tight-lipped on the details.

Gov. John Kasich is scheduled to meet Friday with college leaders to unveil new higher education funding recommendations.

The governor offered few specifics when asked by reporters Thursday about the announcement. Kasich only said he and school presidents believe there should be incentives to get students to graduate.

Only about a quarter of Ohioans hold college degrees, about five points below the national average. The lag has left many non-degreed Ohioans unemployed, even as high-paying jobs open up in fields like technology, health care and energy.

A panel has been studying ways to boost Ohio's college graduation rate.
